Modalities of Treatment

  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) provides clients with skills to manage painful emotions and decrease conflict in relationships. DBT specifically focuses on providing therapeutic skills in four key areas: mindfulness which focuses on improving an individual's ability to accept and be present in the current moment, distress tolerance which is geared toward crisis intervention skills, emotion regulation which covers strategies to manage and change intense emotions that cause problems, and interpersonal effectiveness which consists of techniques that allow a person to communicate with others in a way that is assertive while maintaining self-respect, and strengthening relationships.

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is all about learning to recognize cognitive distortions in thinking that cause problematic thinking patterns and learn to evaluate and manage them in an alternate way.

We all get stuck at some point in unhelpful and ineffective ways of thinking about things. CBT helps to bring awareness of this, identify the causes and provide alternatives to become more effective in our thought processes.

  • An important step in managing anxiety involves facing feared situations, places or objects. It is normal to want to avoid the things you fear. The process of facing fears is called exposure. Exposure involves gradually and repeatedly going into, or exposing yourself, to feared situations until you feel less anxious.
